Have you given some of your characters extra distincs features? These guys here do not ever put the camera away, for instance.
I've done those palm trees for my beach level! Took me about 6 hours to make them, I've drawn them in pixelart style and then I've made the shaders to animate them. I kind of like it, what do you think?
